چکیده

We introduce a mixture model intended to describe the dynamics of the mucus layer that wraps the gut mucosa. This model takes into account the fluid mechanics of the gut content, the inhomogeneous rheology that depends on the fluid composition, and the main physiological mechanisms that ensure the homoeostasis of the mucus layer. Numerical simulations, based on a finite volume approach, prove the ability of the model to produce a stable steady-state mucus layer. We also perform a sensitivity analysis by using a meta-model based on polynomial chaos in order to identify the main parameters impacting the shape of the mucus layer. The effect of the interaction of the mucus with a population of bacteria is eventually discussed.

The effects of herbal plants on Mucin 2 gene expression and performance in ascetic broilers

The mucus layer plays an important role as an intermediate for the protection of the gut against acidic chyme, digestive enzymes, and pathogens; in addition, it acts as a lubricant and facilitator of nutrient transportation. Phytogenic compounds seem to promote intestinal mucus production. OBJECTIVES: The current study was conducted to investigate the effects of low and high levels of energy an...

Impact of Multi-metal Mixture Administration Through Drinking Water on the Gut Bacterial Microflora and Oxidative Stress Parameters in Male and Female Mice

Background: Heavy metal containing wastes reaches to the food chain either directly or indirectly. These ingested toxic elements manifest direct impact on the gut ecosystem and its overall functioning. The present study explores the alteration in mice gut bacteria on exposure to mixture of toxic heavy metals through drinking water.  Methods: Twelve experimental groups of Swiss albino male and ...

Secretory IgA is Concentrated in the Outer Layer of Colonic Mucus along with Gut Bacteria

Antibodies of the secretory IgA (SIgA) class comprise the first line of antigen-specific immune defense, preventing access of commensal and pathogenic microorganisms and their secreted products into the body proper. In addition to preventing infection, SIgA shapes the composition of the gut microbiome. SIgA is transported across intestinal epithelial cells into gut secretions by the polymeric i...

Spatial heterogeneity of gut microbiota reveals multiple bacterial communities with distinct characteristics

We analyzed bacterial communities of six distinct gut sites (the food bolus and mucus layer of the proximal small intestine, cecum and distal large intestine), using wild folivorous flying squirrels. We found significant spatial heterogeneity in composition, diversity, and species abundance distributions (SADs) of gut microbiota, corresponding to physicochemical conditions. High diversity was d...
